YOUTH CLUBBERS TAKE ON A SUPPER CLUB CHALLENGE AT CACTUS KITCHENS

Young chefs from Providence House Youth Club in Clapham Junction are getting busy at The Michel Roux Jr Cookery School at Cactus Kitchens in Clapham this week cooking up a big surprise for family and friends.

The youngsters are taking part in a six-week afterschool supper club challenge served up by Cactus Kitchens, the latest in a series of cooking and hospitality collaborations between the cookery school and Providence House designed to build life skills, self-confidence and food knowledge.

The project concludes on the evening of Thursday 16th February with a celebratory dinner in the stylish Cactus Kitchens dining room cooked and served by the young chefs for proud family and friends. It will be an opportunity for the supper clubbers to show off what they've learnt. And their guests have a treat in store.

Monday’s workshop was a dress rehearsal for Thursday night’s dinner as the girls and boys perfected their impressive menu of roasted vegetable tart, chicken schnitzel with homemade coleslaw and chips and chocolate brownies served with a scoop of award-winning ‘healthy’ ice cream from south-west London brand Oppo.

For the past six weeks, the youngsters have been working hard to develop their cooking skills and foodie credentials in the after school sessions run by cookery school director Anna Ratcliffe and home economist, Harriet Worthington.

Director Anna says, “With supper clubs being hugely popular across the country theming the 6-week project around the children creating their own event has helped make the sessions relevant and open up their eyes to the varied opportunities in the exciting world of food. It’s been great watching the kids’ confidence grow.”

To ensure it’s a night to remember the pair have also been giving the youngsters tips on table setting, menu design and service. For a touch of added glamour, Cactus Kitchens’ resident Maître D’, Rosie Jones led a session teaching the kids how to shake up mocktails for their VIP guests.

Looks like these fresh faces will soon be old hands in the kitchen.
