Women treat it, Men end it

26 January 2015 15:39

In the UK, 72% of people being treated for depression are women. But 75% of suicides are men.

These figures, compiled by the Men’s Health Forum, show that both men and women have trouble coping but men are not getting the help they need.

Fortunately, action is now being taken to tackle this problem. At national level, mental health now has equal status to physical health in UK health policy. Meanwhile, at local level, mental health charities are asking the nation to take 5 minutes on 5th February to have a conversation about mental health.

In East London, therapist Pippa Moye is offering Time To Talk all day on 5th February for anyone who needs a chance to discuss their problems.

Time to Talk is an initiative created by mental health charities MIND and Rethink Mental Health. For 5 minutes, on Thursday 5th February, people around the UK are being encouraged to make time for their friends, family, clients and colleagues to talk about a problem.

Pippa is a Holistic Therapist and Reiki Master who specialises in relaxation and stress management. She helps clients to overcome the physical and emotional symptoms of anxiety, depression and stress so that they can regain control of their lives.

According to the Office for National Statistics, one-fifth of adults in the UK experience anxiety or depression. These problems are very common and nobody should feel embarrassed to come forward and ask for help.

Efforts are now being made to remove the stigma associated with mental illness and make it easier for people to access the help they need. Pippa at Silver Ray Healing Therapies intends to contribute to this by providing Time to Talk on 5th February.

She can be contacted in advance or on the 5th February 10a.m.-7p.m. for a free half hour consultation at Silver Ray Healing Therapies

On Monday 19 January the Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg hosted a Mental Health Conference at which he called on the NHS to aim for zero suicides.

This follows a radical shift in policy in July 2012 in which the NHS was tasked with giving equal priority to mental health as it does to physical health.
