Talented Northern artists exhibit in the Capital

Eight talented artists who were included in the recent New Light Prize Exhibition are showing their work around the capital during the Summer of 2016.

Newcastle-born artist Joshua Waterhouse, whose work ‘Josephine’ won the Patron’s Choice Award at the New Light Prize Exhibition has had his oil painting ‘The Weaver’ short-listed for the BP Portrait Awards 2016. Selected from over 2,500 entries submitted from 80 countries, Joshua’s piece features a woman called Belinda Rose who is a weaver from Aberdeenshire. The painting is showing at the National Portrait Gallery from the 23 June – 4 September 2016.

Three short-listed artists from the New Light Prize Exhibition are also exhibiting at the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition. Sheffield artist Mandy Payne, who won the £10,000 Valeria Sykes Award at the New Light Prize Exhibition, Yorkshire-born artist Tony Noble and printmaker Emma Lawrenson, who won the New Light Zillah Bell Printmakers’ Prize, all have works showing at the renowned annual Summer Exhibition.

Emma Lawrenson says of the opportunity: “I was absolutely delighted to be selected again for this year’s Summer Exhibition. Even though I have been accepted in previous years, it is always very nerve racking to find out if you have been chosen. It's a real privilege, and a fantastic show.”

New Light short-listed artists Michael Ashcroft and Chris Rigby both have works featuring in the New English Arts Club at the Mall Galleries from 16 – 25 June 2016 and Bolton-born artist Patsy Whiting’s work will be featured at the Society of Women Artists Summer Exhibition at the Mall Galleries from 28 July to 7 August 2016.

This is open to all Northern artists with prizes totaling over £15,000 including 'The Valeria Sykes Award' of £10,000.
