Support Small Business Saturday and shop local, urges Altum Designs

A company which creates multi-tools for cyclists is urging Christmas shoppers to back Small Business Saturday and to use the opportunity to buy locally on their nearest high street as they look for that elusive perfect seasonal gift.

Daniel Varney is the owner of Altum Designs, which aims to make cleverly conceived tools for use at home but which are also portable enough for cyclists to carry with them on the road.

Varney said: “We support Small Business Saturday as the perfect chance to think about shopping somewhere that's not one of the big stores or internet giants.

“Why not try an independent, smaller retailer that’s close to you in your community, especially if it’s one you haven’t used before?”

Small Business Saturday is a non-commercial, grassroots campaign and the event is held annually on the first Saturday in December. It aims to create a positive impact on smaller businesses which lasts all year.

The idea is that customers make an effort to support all kinds of smaller enterprises, based in offices or perhaps online, as well as in retail outlets. Many retailers encourage the occasion with discounts or by hosting events.

Last year, the campaign saw nearly £750m being spent on the day, while public figures supporting it included fashion designer Alexa Chung, actor Billie Piper and the Mayor of London.

Varney added: “Of course the cyclist in your life will love something bike-related from a smaller retailer. One of our handy multi-tools could make the perfect gift!”
