Subscription boxes the new lipstick effect

Subscription box sales are on the rise, with nearly one fifth of Brits signing up to receive a host of different goodies direct to our door, according to new research by uOpen, the UK’s first subscription box marketplace.

The survey of 2,000 consumers, carried out by research company Censuswide reveals that over a quarter of respondents say they buy subscription boxes as a treat - why are we all rushing to an outdated shopping model to feel good? Two thirds (63%) said it was because they loved receiving a surprise package in the post and nearly the same number are actually craving a physical delivery or treat. In the digital era Brits are becoming increasingly fed up with what comes through their door with over half (57.8%) stating they hate it when they only receive bills in the post.

19% - more than 12 million - of us have signed up for subscription boxes in the last six months as the British public increasingly move away from the High Street and less than 1% of us had a subscription back in 2014, proving it is one of the fastest-growing retail trends in the UK right now.

Carola York, Managing Director at uOpen said: “The trend for purchasing subscription boxes shows no signs of slowing down and the growing tendency for self-gifting is synonymous with this. As the economic uncertainty around Brexit continues, we are likely to see this lipstick effect expand across all the age groups.”
