Royal British Legion and Bexleyheath Town Centre join forces to launch Poppy Appeal 2016

On Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th October Bexleyheath Town Centre will host the 2016 Poppy Appeal launch event in partnership with the Royal British Legion.

There will be a family friendly event in Bexleyheath Town Centre with a display of military service vehicles past & present and active Army Personnel, Air Cadets and Police Cadets on hand to talk through their active roles and the works they are currently undertaking. The Royal British Legion will be hosting a Poppy Appeal marquee and there will also be a Great War Trench Experience to be housed in Market Place and other military exhibition stands.

Town Centre Manager, Tony Garratt said “ As we continue to mark the Anniversary years of the First World War and Centenary of the Battle of Somme, Bexleyheath is preparing for the launch of the Poppy Appeal 2016. This was a very popular event last year with a full-size replica Spitfire (pictured) in the town and we expect this year to be equally as special. We hope to raise thousands of pounds for the Royal British Legion who do such important fundraising within our community. ”

The Poppy Appeal is The Royal British Legion’s annual fundraising appeal starting in late October and running through to Remembrance Sunday on 13th November. The Bexleyheath BID have sponsored over 100 Giant Poppies to be placed on each lamp column along the Broadway, Bexleyheath.

In addition, there will be a ceremony at Christ Church starting at 11am on 29th October to open the Garden of Remembrance in the presence of the Deputy Mayor of Bexley and led by the Reverend Trevor Wyatt. There will be crosses to commemorate the sacrifice of Bexley residents who served in the armed forces in conflicts since 1914.

After the service, the Deputy Mayor and other Dignitaries will proceed to the Clock Tower in Bexleyheath Town Centre to visit the Royal British Legion marquee and other Poppy Appeal launch day activities.
