Supertreats

Move over chocolate! The smart Easter treats are here.

22 March 2016 09:00

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

With Easter only a few days away, is the prospect of a long weekend of chocolate excess for the family giving you nightmares? If you're looking for an alternative to the usual refined sugar- and stimulant-laden treats, look no further. Supertreats are here to save the day!

Most parents know the effect chocolate has on their kids. High levels of refined sugar and stimulants - theobromine and caffeine - cause blood sugar levels to fluctuate wildly which leads to temper-tantrums, poor concentration and restless sleep.

Parents are becoming more and more concerned with the high sugar content of foods that their children eat. And when it comes to giving them treats in particular, they have good reason to be. A 50g bar of standard chocolate can contain up to 6 teaspoons of refined sugar - and the stimulant equivalent of drinking a shot of espresso!

This Easter, why not break the cycle of guilt and treat them to Supertreats bars instead - they're the healthier alternative to chocolate for kids.

Supertreats bars look and taste just as yummy as milk chocolate but are made from 100% natural, organic ingredients and contain no refined sugar or stimulants. They’re a delicious blend of carob, whole milk and cocoa butter, gently sweetened with coconut blossom nectar - which means they’re packed with wholesome goodness too.

In fact, unlike standard chocolate, they actually provide sustained, slow-release energy, which helps keep blood sugar levels more stable and kids from ‘bouncing off the walls’.

Supertreats Benefits

- No refined sugar
- No cacao
- No theobromine or caffeine (unlike chocolate)
- Rich in natural vitamins and minerals
- More calcium per bar than in a 100 ml glass of milk
- Sustained, slow-release energy
- 100% natural ingredients
- Organic, ethical and sustainable
- So yummy kids won’t even know it’s not chocolate!

Supertreats bars are available in two delicious varieties - Silky Milky (Plain) and Merry Berry (with Blueberries) - from a growing list of leading health food retailers, including Whole Foods Market and As Nature Intended.

Finally parents can give their kids a genuinely guilt-free, super-healthy chocolatey-treat.

Silky Milky Bar (40g)
RRP: £1.99

Naturally sweet carob is blended with rich cocoa butter and heavenly coconut blossom nectar to create this melt in the mouth treat that (as the name suggests) is as smooth as silk and deliciously creamy too. It gives kids more than enough chocolatey-satisfaction but it won’t leave them feeling fed-up and craving more sweet treats shortly afterwards. Also, they won’t know the difference from milk chocolate.

Ingredients: Organic Cocoa Butter, Organic Coconut Blossom Nectar, Organic Whole Milk Powder, Organic Carob Powder, Organic Madagascan Vanilla, Emulsifier: Sunflower Lecithin.

Allergy advice: Contains Milk. May contain traces of Nuts. Suitable for Vegetarians.

Merry Berry Bar (40g)

Organic carob, rich cocoa butter and heavenly coconut blossom nectar are joined by mini-chunks of juicy blueberries, a superfood in their own right. Perfect for little nibbles between meals (just don’t let the kids catch you), the smooth yummy texture gives way to sweet, succulent fruit. Kids will love the melt-in-the-mouth texture and fruity bursts and we think they’ll never want to go back to their usual sugar-laden treat.

About Supertreats, the company

Mumpreneur Virpi Venho-Jones, came up with the idea for Supertreats a couple of years after the birth of her son, a very energetic little star.

As amazing as his arrival was, the truth is that the demands of motherhood left her totally and utterly exhausted. To try and alleviate the tiredness, she reached for the usual suspects of tea and coffee as well as sweet comfort foods, and in particular chocolate.

But, of course, the stimulants found in these only gave her a temporary high that quickly faded and left her feeling even worse afterwards. She suffered from headaches, lethargy, foggy-headedness, poor concentration and even feelings of depression. And these symptoms would only subside after her next ‘fix’ of stimulants or refined sugar.

Whilst she was battling this low energy and tiredness, her son had grown to an age where chocolate and sweets had started to feature heavily at his friends’ birthday parties. Whilst she loved watching him enjoy himself, the negative effects in him of eating foods laden with refined sugar and stimulants were immediately apparent - uncontrollable burst of energy followed by temper-tantrums and disrupted sleep.

Because of this and her own experience, she felt passionately about protecting his little body and mind from the disrupting blood-sugar highs and lows caused by these so-called treats. She therefore started looking for something that would give him the same joy as chocolate but be truly healthy.

After much searching she failed to find anything suitable and so decided to create her own range of treats for kids using nothing but super nutritious foods. Months spent sourcing ingredients and perfecting recipes at home ended when she hit upon a winning formula. The name Supertreats was chosen because they were literally ‘superfood’ treats...and super is just how they make you feel!
