Local carer turned business owner tackles ‘institutionalised’ residential care homes

11 January 2017 12:09

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

After spending more than a year working in a local residential care home, Tibor Dusnoki’s experiences left him disheartened and angry at the way in which elderly and vulnerable residents were treated. Rather than remain a part of what he considered to be a broken system, Tibor took perhaps the boldest step, and started his own business to directly tackle the problem.

Tibor has been running his Promedica24 business since March 2015. His Surrey-based company offers clients a 24 hour, live-in care service as a genuine alternative to residential care homes. Tibor proudly declares his business is as much about companionship as it is care.

“When I first started working in a care home, it was a real shock to me. I was looking after 15-20 people at any one time and I did the best that I possibly could for each of them but in reality, you’re just flitting from one to the next. You oversee, you wash, you change pads… you don’t ‘care’ like that, it’s impossible. Residents in care homes have absolutely no independence. They usually have a small room, have to share a bathroom, are told what and when to eat, even when to sleep. I had to ask myself, is there really no better way to provide these ladies and gentlemen with a more dignified life?” says Tibor.

Desperate to make a difference and challenge the system, Tibor looked to his wife, a dental nurse, and his two sons for their approval before taking the plunge: “My wife was very supportive of the decision to start Promedica24. She’s actually worked as a domiciliary care worker in the past as well so was really pro live-in care. As for my two boys, they’re just proud that we have what is now a family business and that what we do makes a real difference in people’s lives.”

Tibor matches his carers to his clients based not just on medical and support needs but on personality, hobbies and interests to enable those receiving care to either continue with or re-discover their independence, get out and about and most importantly, stay in the homes they love. A far cry from his experiences in the residential care home that many have no choice but to call home.

Tibor’s ideals clearly resonate with his community. The demand for his live-in care service is growing and he has already helped over 40 families in the area. Promedica24 also works closely with St Peter’s Hospital by assisting those who are fit to be discharged but have no family or support network.

“It’s a win-win scenario. We alleviate the dreaded bed-blocking that is such a huge problem for the hospital and we empower patients by getting them home to regain their independence and enjoy life with as much freedom and flexibility as we can,” Tibor explains.

Tibor considers himself every inch the local businessman. And, just like every business owner he has grand ambitions for growth. This means employing more staff and taking on premises locally. But for Tibor, his drive is also about the impact Promedica24 can have on the elderly and those in need.

“Owning a business that improves people’s lives and means they don’t have to go into care, that’s pretty special. I love what I’m doing now so I plan to stay in the business until retirement when I hope to hand the reins to my youngest son. I’m not just building a business that serves my community, I’m building a legacy for my family too.”
