LAUNCH OF 1st NATIONAL ‘OSCARS of RECOVERY’ AWARDS
to honour stars working in the recovery field ~ World Drug Day 26 June
For the first time, people working in the recovery field will be honoured at a special awards dinner on Monday 26 June 2017 at the 5* Royal Horseguards In London, hosted by R+ (Recovery Plus, part of DB Recovery) and Nacoa (National Association for Children of Alcoholics).
The 'Oscars of Recovery' will celebrate the many unsung heroes and heroines, from the best volunteers and professionals helping people to recover from addiction and supporting children of alcoholics.
The Awards will recognise the professionalism and efforts of volunteers, professionals and advocates and is part of a wider programme to help remove the stigma of this sector due to lack of understanding.
“Nacoa has my huge support and I’m very proud to be associated with it and it motivated me to run the marathon. I am happy to support the Recovery Awards Dinner this month to recognise all those working hard to help others.”
~ Jon Ashworth, a Labour shadow cabinet minister*, who grew up with an alcoholic father and ran the London Marathon in April to raise funds for Nacoa.
The Awards are free to enter, and open to anyone who can provide evidence of an individual's or organisation's recovery endeavours. All winners will receive certificates and special prizes including a diamond ring and international advertising packages.
The Recovery Awards winners will be announced at the Dinner on Monday 26 June 2017 at 7pm at the Royal Horseguards in London and there are still some tickets available http://events.recoveryplusdb.com/recovery-awards-dinner website for information.
Deirdre Boyd of DB Recovery Resources explained the reason behind the launch. “As this is the first year, we are anticipating that most of the awards will be for Lifetime Achievements - people who have been advocating and facilitating recovery for decades but have not yet had their achievements publicly acknowledged. You could say this is also like Nacoa which is famous 'overnight' after 26 years of effort.”
AFTER THE ELECTION: THE POLITICIANS’ PROMISES
The event is part of a programme of international activities taking place on World Drug Day, June 26, promoted by WHO (World Health Organisation) and UNODC (United Nations).
The evening ceremony will be an important milestone in raising the awareness of the valuable care given by those working in the recovery field.
DB Recovery Resources + Nacoa have been working with politicians to highlight why society needs this care. In February this year, MPs* from all parties including Caroline Flint, Liam Bryne and Jon Ashworth, launched a political manifesto in support of the children of people with alcohol problems.
They said Britain was facing a “secret scandal” failing the country’s 2.5 million children whose parents misused alcohol.
The manifesto identified an absence of strategies to deal with the issue and a lack of funding in many areas. It also issued 10 demands for government action, including better education for children and professionals, better support for families and action on availability and promotion of alcohol.
Nicola Blackwood, Conservative public health minister* promised to produce a new strategy to help the children of people with alcohol problems.
