"I'm so angry!" Local man starts new business determined to fix care on The Wirral

12 January 2017 09:15

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“I always looked at old people with a level of suspicion as a teenager. But spending time in my parent’s care home as a young man, it hit me that they were people, they’d had lives – extraordinary lives! I laughed with them, cried with them, hugged them when they needed it and held their hand while they slipped away. And now, I’m angry.”

After years in the care industry, local man, Vic Oakden, decided that enough was enough. He's seen first-hand the devastation caused to residential care homes from Local Authority funding cuts and wider government austerity measures. Frequent horror stories of abuse and neglect cause his blood to boil, and for good reason.

“Hearing horror stories about care is awful for anyone. But when you’ve been in the industry and know for a fact that care doesn’t have to be and shouldn’t be that way… you start to get angry. You get angry when people are abused or are put at risk. You find yourself becoming something of an unplanned activist for care!”

Describing himself as a crusader, Vic has left behind the world of secure employment and launched a new kind of care business. One that is more affordable than a care home and offers truly personal care. Promedica24, promises to keep elderly and vulnerable people safely at home and out of care homes and hospitals by providing 24-hour live- in care. This means carers actually live in the home with their clients providing one-to-one companionship and care.

At 41, married with two young children, taking the plunge into business ownership hasn’t been an easy decision for Vic. But he puts a large part of his determination and even more of his courage down to the love and support of his wife, Anna.

“Anna’s my best friend. We’ve been together since we were teenagers, married since we were 24. We’ve travelled the world, lived in Dubai and came home to The Wirral to start a family. She’s seen and experienced my frustrations with the care industry so when I talked to her about the idea for the business she was as passionate about it as I was. We both feel that care in the UK for the elderly isn’t the best: people are receiving the bare minimum of care at a time in their lives when then should be receiving compassion, respect and dignity.

“Live-in care is a game changer; more people on The Wirral need to know about this and I’m determined to be the one to spread the word. I’m going to change people’s lives for the better.”

True to his word, despite only launching in October 2016, Vic is already making an impact and taking on clients across the region. As you would probably expect, his crusade against poor care involves aiming high and reaching as many people as possible.

“My goal is to be helping 100 people in the next 12-18 months – that’s 100 people who will be having a quality of life that they wouldn’t have if not for me. For me, this isn’t about making money, this is about helping people. When it’s done right, care is rewarding. It’s not a word that should be thrown around as a function – it’s an emotion.

“We could provide care that’s just a function and people will survive or we can provide good care and people will enjoy life to the fullest to the end.”
