FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Redundancy is, of course, up there with bereavement, divorce and (probably) moving house as one of life’s most stressful events. So when David Harris was made redundant by a High Street supermarket after 16 years, it could have been a real setback.
But Harris felt he could turn things around, and, after a summer spent studying potential business ideas, he undertook some training to gain greater business insight. The courses were held at Nwes Norwich, which was set up in 1982 and is now among the UK’s biggest not-for-profit enterprise agencies, run with support from the EU’s European Regional Social Fund.
Harris now runs Harris’s Hog Roast, based in Dis but travelling further afield when required. This catering company handles private and public events, with tasty pork roasted on-site and served in rolls alongside salad and cupcakes for pudding.
He launched the business in mid-October 2016 at a local monthly farmer’s market, and, as it approaches its second anniversary, it's grown in popularity to become very busy.
“The first year was all about learning the industry,” Harris explains. “But this year, since May, I’ve done events, including markets and fairs, every weekend – I also do a Thursday lunchtime too.
“We’re always keen to use high-quality food that’s ethically and locally sourced, and always use shoulder joints of meat. It’s also a healthier way to feed guests because of the reduced oil and fat used. Hog roasts are a great, cost-effective and tasty solution to catering requirements at weddings and other occasions.
"It's been great and I really love running the business - I don't think I've made a pig's ear of it!"
