Global award win for Reading tutor

A local tutor has won a global award that recognises his outstanding commitment to changing children’s lives.

Chris Hinsley, 35, from Reading, who dedicates his time, effort and sheer passion to tutoring children, has clinched the title for Global Tutor of the Year. Chris has been a tutor with the Berkshire office of Tutor Doctor for less than two years and has already made a huge impact with his students.

Chris was presented with the award by Tutor Doctor’s CEO and world-renowned education professional, Frank Milner, on 15th October after Frank flew over to celebrate with Chris on the night. Celebrations took place on an intimate cruise along the Thames with his colleagues and Tutor Doctor associates.

“To be recognised by my bosses, Mark and Joanna, was wonderful. Then I won the UK award and now, being awarded at an international level, by industry experts, is both humbling and very much appreciated. I’m proud to have developed skills for getting young people that have no interest in education to believe in its value and, most importantly, themselves,” says Chris.

Now in its fifth year, the Tutor of the Year awards are run by global education specialist Tutor Doctor. The judges were made up of independent industry experts from across the world including Adam Muckle, the President of Tutors’ Association in the UK, and Lawrence Barns, the President and CEO of the Learning Disabilities Association of Ontario.

Chris earned his place as a finalist in the global awards after being named UK Tutor of the Year in August. Country winners from around the world then went head-to-head for the global win. With over 600 tutors nominated and more than 40,000 votes cast worldwide, the decision was tough, but Chris’ passion outshone his fellow contenders.

“Although all of the finalists are fantastic at what they do, Chris is a worthy winner,” explains Frank Milner. “He demonstrates true passion and commitment to his tutoring, whilst changing the lives of families too. Chris epitomises everything the company stands for; helping students to reach their full potential and achieve greatness with the five-star service that he provides.”

It was Chris’ commitment to young people and helping them better their lives through education that stood out to the panel and saw him crowned the winner. He tutors 22 hours a week with Tutor Doctor and spends two days at Reading Youth Offending Service, helping 13 to 17-year-olds with their communication skills. Along with his new title, Chris received an all-expenses paid trip worth £1500.

Adam Muckle explains his reasons behind selecting Chris as the global winner: “In my eyes, Chris has the utmost qualities when faced with the most challenging students and is successful in motivating them to learn.”

Matt McCorkle, the co-founder of the extra-curricular resource Clear Choice Test Prep, also sat on the judging panel and describes how he made his decision almost immediately: “His clarity of purpose was ultimately why I chose Chris; I feel that his story best exemplifies the full value that tutors can provide. Chris genuinely sees his role as a supportive mentor as his core responsibility.”

The win has helped Chris’ personal brand flourish too. “Winning the award is fantastic! On an intimate level, it has already helped me get a student on side; I mentioned the award and he was thrilled to be tutored by ‘The best tutor in the world’.”
