Early childhood is the key to mental health says school principal

The importance of teaching in early childhood cannot be underestimated and could be crucial for good mental health in the future, says Tabita Gutu, the founder of Bluebell Montessori School.

Speaking after Universal Children's Day, Ms Gutu stated that too much of modern schooling is based around the ideas of statistics and performance targets instead of focusing on creating a well-rounded approach to life from an early age. She also said that teachers need to engage with children on an individual level if they are to develop a child’s full potential.

“Early childhood is the most important period of life,” said Ms Gutu. “It is when intelligence, beliefs and values are being formed. This is why it is essential that society provides as many resources as possible to aid in the development of young children.”

“Montessori schools are based on an ethos that includes kindness, caring and fairness, which are some of the building blocks needed for a decent society. Universal Children’s Day provides the perfect opportunity for encouraging parents, teachers and indeed the whole of society to reflect on the way we treat children and on what they are learning about the world. If we want a fair and caring society then we need to model these behaviours to children.”

Ms Gutu is the Principal of Bluebell Montessori School, Wembley, and states on the schools website that she strongly believes Montessori children do better in life than children with traditional education.

Notes to editors:

Universal Children’s Day was founded by the United Nations in 1954 to promote international togetherness and children's well-being.
