Craft club launches stress-busting workshop series

A London-based events company have brought together paper cutting, hand quilting and casting sessions to help improve local happiness and well-being.

London Craft Club, which travels throughout the capital, is focused on busy Londoners and the basis that regular crafting is proven to decrease stress.

The team are made up of friendly experts in a wide range of techniques and hold the events in a range of quirky London venues.

Founder Sonia Bownes commented: “TV shows like the Great British Bake Off and many other shows like that, are refocusing the minds of viewers to recognise the benefits of traditional skills. This has encouraged a resurgence of sewing clubs and other traditional craft, often with a modern twist. More people are recognising the benefits of crafting, socially. I’m so pleased that I can turn a 15 year passion into an opportunity to help people of all ages to relearn or skill up in these rewarding crafts – and improve their happiness in the process!”

According to research conducted in 2014, textile crafting including knitting, sewing, weaving and crocheting all produce the same outcome as meditation and mindfulness – and left the majority of participants feeling “very happy” after just one session. They also reported feeling calmer, less sad, less anxious and more confident.

Bownes continued: “Crafting is a great way to step out of the everyday stresses and pressures of our busy lives. It’s a wonderful way to unwind and the satisfaction of knowing you made something from scratch is priceless, You can use the skills again and again, whenever you want.”.

The club is inviting select craft bloggers to each of its events, allowing them to review their experience and put forward any suggestions for development.

The not-for-profit organisation also uses any income generated from the sessions to fund training for its expert session leaders, who often go on to use these skills professionally.
