The Big Bear’s apple trees are traditional varieties and managed without the use of pesticides. Shropshire sheep graze the orchards and help to reduce weeds without damaging the trees.
The apple varities grown are Flanders, Cox, Kidds Orange Red, Bramley, Elstarr, Greensleeves,Jonagold, Egremont Russett, Ashmeads Kernel, Yarlington Mill, Tale Sweet, Black Dabinett, Tremletts Bitter, Major Browns, Kingston Black, Foxwhelp, Tom Putt and Sweet Alford.
The Big Bear Cider Mill now has planning permission for a large wormery. Worm composting is using worms to recycle organic materials such as apple pulp, cardboard packaging, food waste etc into a valuable vermicompost, or worm compost.
In fact, worms can consume and compact waste so well, that they can reduce the volume of organic matter by 95 per cent. If everyone used worm farms then rubbish could be reduced by 2000 lbs. per person.
The Big Bear is working with Costa Coffee on their Grounds for Ground scheme – utilising used coffee grounds to provide additional nitrogen to feed the soil.
