Construction firm upgrades to green vehicles

A Wakefield-based firm is saving money and reducing its carbon footprint by upgrading in its traditional fleet with its first Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV).

Featherstone-based Route One has been operating in the construction and highways sector Nationally for over a decade.

The Plug in electric vehicles (PHEV) are part of the first phase of the planned replacements which also includes the upgrade of six transit vans to the latest most economical models.

The company, which is in its tenth year, has purchased the vehicles in order to commit to reducing their carbon footprint and plans to replace its remaining Company Cars and Vans by the end of August 2016.

The company is committed to sustainability and as such Route One has appointed one of its Senior Management team, Operations Manager Rob Thomas as its Lean Champion. With a focus to ensure the business is performing to the highest environmental standards as possible. Since the dual role came into effect, the aim for the business is to save on both monetary and their environmental impact by selecting a number of energy saving measures including a Fleet Management System and Tracker System to enable them to plan the best and most economical usage of their fleet which ultimately reduces both their costs and carbon footprint.
Having recently undertaken its first Highways England Lean Maturity Assessment (HELMA), the subsequent report was complementary and congratulated the Company on the measures it has introduced so far and its future planned improvements.

Route One’s Operations Manager and Lean Champion, Rob Thomas said:

“Not only are the PHEV’s reducing Route One’s Carbon Footprint, they also offer substantial savings both to the company and the driver in the form of reduced company car tax.”

With this transformative approach, the company is aiming to save significant costs to the business, which will be monitored over the next 12 months.

The staff who are driving the green transport vehicles have also been integral in selecting the new company cars.

Rob continued:

“The staff have been fully involved with the choice of colours and specification of the vehicles. Having driven them for three months they are proving to be a popular choice.”
