Blockbuster Podcast For Netflix Viewers

A new podcast reviewing Netflix films has been launched.

Flixwatcher, which launched on December 7, is the brainchild of co-hosts Helen Sadler and Kobi Omenaka.

Kobi, who is also the show's producer, said: “We invite guests, typically other podcasters, onto the podcast with us, who choose which films to discuss.

“We then rate each of the films using our unique Netflix-focused scoring system.”

The unique system is made up of a ‘recommendability’ [sic] score, a repeat viewing score, a small screen score, and an engagement score.

Kobi added: “We took inspiration for the scoring system from 1990s TV show Moviewatch, hosted by TV and radio presenter Johnny Vaughn.

“By using our unique scoring system we can assess how well a great cinema movie performs in the comfort of your own home, because a film that would work well in the cinema might not necessarily be great on Netflix.”

To coincide with the launch of the Flixwatcher podcast, Kobi and Helen are promoting a competition, with the winner getting their hands on an iPad, access to Netflix for a year, as well as a year’s supply of Propercorn popcorn.

The release of the podcast comes at a time when Netflix recently updated their platform, for the first time allowing users to download their films and TV shows to watch them offline.

Kobi said: “The fact that the main prize for our competition is an iPad means that another user will have the chance to take advantage of Netflix’s new service.

“Now you have the ability to download your shows and films onto your tablet or computer you can take them anywhere, brightening up the dullest commute or train journey.”

The origins of the podcast can be traced back to podcasts like 'Kermode and Mayo’s BBC Radio 5 Live’s Flagship Film Review Programme' aka 'Wittertainment', along with Empire Film Magazine's Podcast and the sadly defunct Guardian Film Show, which co-hosts Kobi and Helen both say were early influences.

"We know a lot of people that listen to these podcasts but feel slightly out of touch they talk about recent cinema releases, which they often cannot get to. The hope is that these by reviewing films on Netflix that we can include a lot more of these people!"

There are currently four episodes of the Flixwatcher podcast discussing 'The Talented Mr Ripley', 'Manhattan', 'Amanda Knox' and 'Pirates! An Adventure with Scientists', which are available on iTunes free of charge.
