Being more eco-friendly doesn’t have to beige and boring.

Nothing is more important in the home in 2019 than cutting back on plastic. Thanks in part to David Attenborough, we’re all making more considered and careful choices in what we buy. At White Space Home, we’re embracing the green lifestyle, yet still offering design led new and vintage homeware selected for their lack of plastic and long-lasting appeal.

Owner Sadie White found that her love of interior design and colour was compromised by the limited range of items on offer when she set out to reduce the amount of plastic waste passing through here home. Items may have been more eco-friendly, but they were dull and drab.

Instead, Sadie put the emphasis on sourcing fun and colourful accessories that were low in terms of environmental impact and both high on reusability and style.

Sadie said: “Everybody needs to do their bit and make small changes to their lifestyle. It’s not about replacing what you have right now, it’s about making sure that when you do, you choose the right item. We have sourced items that are classic, fun and long lasting making sure they don’t fall in and out of trends (and then straight into the bin).”

According to figures published via the BBC, the average person in the UK produces approximately 76kg of plastic each year and despite the government’s efforts to reduce single use plastics, including their work with trade associations to introduce the UK plastic pact, consumers are keen to change their buying habits now.

Sadie said: “We launched White Space Home, to show consumers that being more eco-friendly can be simple and that by making a few small changes they can increase their eco credentials and still keep a fun sense of style within their home.”

Sadie’s top swaps to reduce plastic in the home are changing from cling film to beeswax wraps, using a wooden or compostable dish brush and ensuring you always have reusable shopping bags wherever you may be.
