70 tons of food in a lifetime!

By some estimates, 80 percent of the energy we use in our lifetime is used to digest the foods we eat. Think of it - most of us eat three times a day, plus snacks, so the average person eats about 70 tons of food in a lifetime! Completely digesting the average meal, from the time the food enters the body until the waste leaves, takes an average of three days. This means that every minute of every day, we are digesting foods. Not a second passes that our digestive system is not working at breaking down foods, delivering nutrients and expelling waste.

What is the other 20 percent of our energy being used for? The answer is everything else. All the systems of the body including the immune, respiratory, reproductive, cardiovascular, nervous and muscular systems must share this remaining 20 percent. The digestive system consumes four times more energy per day than all other systems combined.

Looking to increase your body’s metabolic energy? Supplemental enzymes may assist in helping the body’s natural processes, and reduce the amount of energy needed for digestion. This is crucial in releasing enzyme potential to be used elsewhere in the body.

What are Enzymes?

Enzymes are biologically active proteins found in all living cells. Metabolic enzymes catalyze and regulate every chemical reaction that occurs within the human body, making them essential for cellular function and overall health. Digestive enzymes unlock vitamins & minerals that are trapped inside the foods we eat. We need enzymes to create energy for life.

Each enzyme has a unique function based upon the shape of the enzymes. The digestive uses for enzymes are well known, with enzymes like amylase breaking down starches into simple sugars, lipases breaking down fats, and proteases breaking down proteins.

The use of enzymes goes far beyond digestion, however. Taken on an empty stomach, therapeutic enzymes circulate through the bloodstream to support systemic health. The body uses enzymes for the immune, cardiovascular and circulatory systems. They are also used extensively to support muscle, tissue and joint function.

Food Intolerances and Enzyme Deficiencies

When there aren’t enough enzymes to break down a meal; this is called an enzyme deficiency. Individuals may experience enzyme deficiencies as a result of a wide range of factors, including age, diet and lifestyle. Some people naturally have enzyme deficiencies, with digestive challenges arising from dairy, casein, gluten and phenols being the most common. When an enzyme deficiency surrounds a specific food group, it is called food intolerance.

Enzymes for Autism

Many individuals on the autism spectrum may experience food intolerances. Digest Spectrum, by Enzymedica, is one of the only products on the market designed to support multiple food intolerances. It may be ideal for those who suffer digestive difficulties, and are unable to breakdown certain foods.

Digest Spectrum was a recent winner of the AutismOne “Best of Supplements Award.”

Enzymedica founded the first non-profit in the natural products industry for autism, called the Autism Hope Alliance (AHA). Founded in 2009, AHA provides families with strategies and resources to use as successful tools.

Choosing a Supplement

When choosing an enzyme product, look for a supplement that contains blends of enzymes. The most innovative products on the market will optimize activity by blending different strains of the same types of enzyme for maximum effectiveness across the wide range of pH levels found throughout the body.

A History of Expertise

Founded in 1998, Enzymedica is widely recognized as the “enzyme experts.” They manufacture a wide range of enzyme products, all of which are free of filler and binders. All Enzymedica products are 100% vegetarian and vegan & kosher when possible.

“When we began Enzymedica, it was with the goal of creating the highest quality enzyme supplements available,” shares Tom Bohager, Enzymedica’s Founder and Operating Chairman. “We gave the digestive category a solid foundation with our products such as Digest Gold, Acid Soothe, GlutenEase, Lacto and Digest Spectrum. Over the years, it brought us great joy to realize the profound benefits enzymes could provide to individuals dealing with multiple food intolerances, among them [those] on the autism spectrum.”
