5 Top Tips For Designing A Great Business Card

17 November 2015 13:30

Although more and more of modern business is carried out online, the humble printed business card is still a crucial part of your company’s image and advertising arsenal. A unique and cleverly designed business card can really set your company apart from the competition and having a stash to hand out to potential clients or customers is still a great way of expanding your business potential and growth. It’s true to say, however, that there is huge variation in the standard and quality of many printed business cards out there. Anyone can create a clipart-filled card from a cheap online printer for pennies. This won’t lend an air of legitimacy to your company though and could reflect badly on the branding image of your business.

Here are our top tips for creating a business card that will really stand out from the crowd and impress your prospective clients.

1. Get the basics right

Ensure you use a standard size, usually 55 mm x 85mm – your business card needs to fit in the average wallet, pocket or purse or fit neatly on a fridge or notice-board. Any bigger and you risk it being scrunched up and never looked at again! Think carefully too about the size and style of the font you are using: it needs to be legible, easy on the eye and not too close to the borders of the design.

2. Consider a special finish

A fantastic way of adding a bit of interest to your business card is to experiment with texture. A foil block or metallic inking, for instance or a Matt Lamination and a Spot UV, lends your card an unforgettable air of cool sophistication. Alternatively, die cutting the card, either around the edges or by leaving a shape in the middle, is another way of giving your business instant impact. Our Spot UV and shaped cards incorporate matt and silk textures with any shapes that would help promote your business is an excellent choice for that unique appeal.

3. Print on something other than card

To give your printed business card a unique look and feel and distinguish yourself in your new London networking event, why not get inventive and print on another material altogether? Plastic, metal, and even wood can be printed on with a little creativity. You can find some great ideas here [].

4. Be careful with colour

Try to stick to just one or two colours to avoid your card looking too busy. Your company logo should be the main element of the card so you don’t want to overwhelm it with too much background colour or complex patterns. 5. Check, check, check!

Before clicking on your massive print order, do check over your design carefully. It’s always worth getting a second eye to look over your print to avoid a nightmare spelling mistake or rogue apostrophe ending up on all of your business cards!
