3 reasons why you should wear high heels to work

A UK parliamentary report published today calls for a change in the law relating to discriminatory dress codes. This report was triggered by the experience of Nicola Thorp last year. Susannah Davda, Director of The Shoe Consultant Ltd tells us why wearing heels to work is a good thing:

1. Confidence

A little extra height can boost your confidence. The phrase "walk taller" wouldn't exist if it wasn't for this effect. Perhaps this is because you see eye-to-eye or can look down on more of the population when your height is increased.

2. Poise

High heels tend to look smarter than flats. It is difficult to find flats which compliment a skirt or trouser suit as well as a pair of elegant heels.

3. Quality

Heels look more expensive, whereas flats can look cheap. A well-designed high heel in quality leather, will tend to look ooze craftsmanship, whereas even the most beautiful flats from the finest Italian factories will struggle to compete on look.

With all of the above in mind, does Susannah think that women should be forced to wear high heels to work?

"Not unless men are required to wear heels too! Company dress codes are so antiquated. A tie is a bizarre and impractical accessory, as is a pair of high heels. Dress codes should be written in more general, gender-neutral terms such as "hair should be neat, shoes and clothing should be clean and smart".

Do the women Susannah works with struggle to find high heels they can wear comfortably all day?

"Yes, it's very difficult to find comfortable, beautiful, smart shoes, but I know exactly what to look for, and can guide women towards the right styles for their feet, look and lifestyles." "Whether they need footwear for work or for an occasion, they know they can count on me to help them out."
